ARCHITECTURE / STUDIO
Can you imagine facing a beautiful river, where in springtime, a glance out the window reveals stunning cherry blossoms? This is the enviable setting of renowned designer Naoto Fukasawa’s studio. The building, with its minimalist lines, large windows, and white-painted exterior, is an understated yet unmissable presence in the alley. The white exterior design extends seamlessly into the interior, where Fukasawa’s iconic Hiroshima High Chair graces the dining area. The space is devoid of excessive ornamentation, featuring a palette limited to black, white, and brown, with wooden furniture, metalwork, and lighting fixtures serving as accents. The most striking feature is the black spiral staircase, flowing like a ribbon from the basement to the second floor, offering a unique perspective of beauty from every angle. This studio, much like Fukasawa’s previous designs, embodies simplicity, timelessness, and practicality, embracing the “less is more” philosophy.
Designer: Naoto Fukasawa
This simple, square, clean, and orderly window arrangement is one of my favorite designs.
Naoto Fukasawa’s renowned work, the “Hiroshima Chair,” continues his tradition of subtractive design, which emphasizes the user’s intuition. This design approach restores the essence of a simple wooden chair.
Multiple windows, neatly arranged to follow the path of the sunlight, bring warm afternoon light into the room, keeping it bright until nightfall, even without turning on the lights.
Step outside your door to see a creek flanked by beautiful cherry trees, offering a serene and picturesque view both from your doorstep and through the windows.
The main vision of the entire space is a beautiful spiral staircase like a ribbon. The beautiful curves dilute the cold feeling of steel.
